GENESIS
The key has always been the point.
Chicago has always known how to keep a secret. The city invented the velvet rope long before anyone called it that.
In the mid-twentieth century, a particular kind of place flourished here: the key club. Private. Members only. You didn't stumble in. You were brought in by someone who already belonged, handed a physical key, and trusted with the address.
The key wasn't about keeping people out. It was about making sure the people inside actually wanted to be there.
A room full of people who chose to be there — really chose it — is a completely different room than one that anyone can stumble into.
The Lounge is our answer to that loss. A gathering place that takes seriously the idea that the people in the room matter as much as what happens in it.
Every Fellow Traveler card we hand out is a small act of that tradition; a physical object that says you found this place and it found you back.
The door is right there. The key is free. You just have to want to walk through it.
